TMD and myofascial pain

Jaw pain and headaches, taken seriously.

TMD (temporomandibular disorder) refers to problems affecting the jaw joint and the muscles that move it. Myofascial pain is the most common form — soreness and tension in the chewing muscles that can radiate to the face, temples, ears, and neck.

Treated as one system.

01

What causes it?

TMD rarely has a single cause. Common contributors include teeth grinding or clenching (often during sleep or times of stress), an uneven or unstable bite, jaw injury, arthritis in the joint, and muscle overuse from habits like nail biting or chewing gum. Stress plays a significant role. For many patients, several of these factors overlap.

02

How dentistry can help

Treatment focuses on calming the muscles and protecting the joint. A custom occlusal splint or night guard is often the first step. If an unstable bite is contributing, bite adjustments or restorative work can help the teeth come together more evenly. Persistent cases may be referred for physical therapy or specialty care.

03

What you can do now

Jaw exercises, moist heat, a softer diet during flare-ups, and stress-management techniques can take the edge off while we look at the joints, the muscles, and the bite together.

FAQ

TMD questions people actually ask.

Can a dentist in New Middletown treat TMJ or jaw pain?

Yes. Dr. Phillip Arsuffi evaluates TMD and myofascial pain as part of a full exam — joints, muscles, and bite together. Treatment often starts with a custom night guard or occlusal splint. Persistent cases may be referred for physical therapy or specialty care.

What does TMD feel like?

Jaw pain or fatigue, clicking or popping, headaches, difficulty opening wide, or a feeling that your bite is “off.” Pain can radiate to the face, temples, ears, and neck.
